Children's Menu Catering Kenya

What will the children actually eat, how much of it do we need, and how do we keep it safe for the ones with allergies. Hauchi Kay treats children’s catering as its own discipline, not a smaller adult plate.

Portions

Right portions for every age group

A single generic kids plate almost always leads to waste or hungry children later. Hauchi Kay plans across three age bands rather than guessing headcounts on the day.

Toddlers

Small, soft, easy-to-chew portions of about half a standard plate. No whole grapes, hard sweets or small bones.

Young children

A moderate portion sized for an afternoon of play without overloading a small stomach.

Older children

A slightly larger serving close to an adult amount, still in a child-friendly menu style.

Meals they trust

Child-friendly meals Kenyan families recognise

Unfamiliar plating gets left untouched. The menu leans on dishes children already eat at home, which keeps plate waste low.

Familiar favourites

Mild pilau, soft chapati, mashed potato, macaroni and cheese, grilled chicken cut small, sausages, and simple stews with a light sauce.

Texture that gets eaten

Meat in small pieces or strips, not on the bone. Vegetables cooked soft. Nothing that needs cutlery skills a five-year-old has not developed.

Occasions

Where children's catering is used

The same kitchen can run a kids station without becoming two separate operations.

Birthday parties

Hungry from play, eat in a short window, back to games in twenty minutes. Buffet or grazing, food that can be eaten with hands.

School events

Sports days, prize giving and fun days. Boxed portions or a supervised line, extra allergen labelling, grab-and-go for fields.

Family celebrations

A dedicated serving point so children are not queuing behind adults. Young guests served early before restlessness sets in.

Weddings

A children’s station close enough for parents, separate enough not to slow the main line. An attendant often added above thirty young guests.

Church functions

Dozens of children running between tables, with mild food, clear labels and staff briefed on spills and refills.

Kids buffet stations

Lower, shorter, four to five dishes. Mains first, finger foods next, drinks and dessert last so plates stay balanced.

How we serve

Formats, flavour and safety

Spice is mild by default. Safety is standard, not a premium add-on.

01

Finger foods

Chicken bites, mini sausages, small samosas, wedges, spring rolls, cheese cubes and fruit. No knife required.

02

Mild by default

Herbs and a light tomato base. Chilli on the side so older children and adults can add heat.

03

Kids drinks

Fruit juice, flavoured water and a milk option in spill-resistant cups. Chilled water always available outdoors.

04

Small desserts

Mini cupcakes, jelly cups, fruit skewers, cookies and a cake table. Varied, not one large serving of sugar.

05

Allergen labels

Nuts, eggs, dairy, shellfish and gluten labelled. Separate utensils. Allergy lists collected in advance for schools.

06

Safe presentation

Bright plating at child’s eye level. No inedible decor, no toothpicks for toddlers, no choking hazards.

Serving formats

Match the format to how the event runs

Many larger events combine formats, such as a boxed lunch then a small buffet for prize giving.

  • Best for birthday parties, family celebrations and weddings
  • Children move freely between activities and food
  • Staff guide portioning at the line
  • Hot items always have a supervising server
  • Refreshed in small batches through a two to three hour window

  • Long queues move efficiently
  • Best for christening lunches and milestone birthdays
  • Children seated at a dedicated table for a set period
  • Age-based portions plated from the kitchen
  • Quieter than a party buffet
  • Still coordinated with the adult menu
  • Main buffet with two or three mild options
  • Finger food table and drinks within easy reach
  • Dessert or cake table kept slightly separate
  • Theme colours without extra kitchen complexity
  • A second mini station at large events to cut queues

How it works

Planning a children's catering booking

1

Short consultation: date, venue, number of children and a rough age breakdown.

2

A draft children’s menu based on birthday, school, family or wedding.

3

Review the menu, flag allergies and dietary preferences, confirm numbers closer to the date.

4

Food prepared fresh, plated or boxed to the chosen format.

5

Staff briefed on spills, refills and last-minute allergy questions from parents.

Book birthday parties two to three weeks ahead

School events and weddings with a children’s station benefit from four to six weeks so headcounts, allergen lists and staffing can be finalised.

On the day

Stations, safety and mixed guest lists

Children’s planning is handled by staff experienced in age-based portioning, not adapted from a general template at the last minute.

Station layout

Mains first, finger foods and bread next, drinks and dessert at the far end so children build a balanced small plate.

Allergen awareness

Labels at child’s eye level. Separate utensils. Marked allergen-free alternatives for schools and larger parties.

Food safety

Strict temperature control, short holding times, and choking-hazard briefing as standard preparation, not individual judgement.

One mild kitchen line

Base recipes stay mild. Spice is layered afterward for guests who want it, so mixed events stay efficient.

Wedding attendant

Often added above thirty young guests for serving, spills and allergy questions during the reception.

Halal and vegetarian

Cultural and religious adjustments at consultation, without disrupting age-based portioning.

Drinks height

Stations lower and refilled more often. Children take smaller amounts more frequently than one large serving.

Theme without cost spikes

Colour-coordinated servingware and fun shapes, without adding complexity to the kitchen line.

Two coordinated menus

A mixed wedding usually runs an adult buffet and a children’s station from the same kitchen, served at the same time.

Standing school bookings

Termly or annual events can lock in pricing and menu structure ahead of the school calendar.

Dessert tables

Children’s selection at a lower height. The adult dessert display continues separately at weddings.

Why Hauchi Kay

Greatwall Gardens, Athi River. Staff briefed specifically on serving children safely, not a last-minute adaptation.

FAQs

Children's menu catering FAQs

Three age bands: toddlers two to four, young children five to nine, and older children ten to twelve. Portion size, texture and spice are adjusted for each band rather than one uniform kids plate.

Yes. A mixed wedding or family celebration usually runs two coordinated menus from the same kitchen, an adult buffet and a children’s station, served at the same time so no one waits.

Menus are built with allergen awareness from planning. Nuts, eggs, dairy and shellfish are labelled. Separate utensils reduce cross contact. Parents and school coordinators flag known allergies in advance.

Children’s dishes are seasoned mild by default, with chilli and heavier spice on the side so older kids and adults can add heat. One kitchen line works for the whole guest list.

Birthday parties and family celebrations: two to three weeks. School events and weddings with a children’s station: four to six weeks.

Yes. Standard packages include fruit juice, flavoured water and a milk option, plus a dessert selection sized for small hands. A dessert table or ice cream station can be added at any tier.
